X1 Robotics

X1 Robotics is a technical project within ASME @ UCLA (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers at UCLA). X1 develops unique robots based on student pitches. I joined the project in Fall 2019 by pitching the BruinBot project, which would later go on to become the group's main robotics project through 2021. I became the X1 Robotics Lead in Spring 2020 and am now responsible for managing meetings, project details, financials, and leading technical workshops. X1 is composed of 30-40 engineering students split into 7 subteams.

Projects

BruinBot   (2019-Present)

BruinBot is a personable robot designed to navigate UCLA's campus and initiate basic interactions with students. The robot's design contains a friendly exterior, robust drive system, and internal payload compartment to dispense snacks and gifts to students. BruinBot's manufacturing is continuing during the 2021-2022 academic year.

During my time in X1, I worked to head the Chassis Subteam as well as to create and program custom facial animations on an LED panel faceplate. I also oversaw all teams working on the robot throughout its development.

The Guardian   (2018-2021)

The Guardian robot is a hexapedal walking robot inspired by the video game Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It is able to walk and turn, and is also able to use image processing to focus a laser pointer on a moving target. The Guardian project was X1's main focus in 2018-2019, and was continued in 2020 with a fully revised design. The final robot was completed in 2021.

As X1 lead in 2019-2021, I coordinated the manufacturing schedule and worked hands-on to assemble the legs, chassis and electronics.

ARC (Aerial Robotic Control)   (2020-2021)

The ARC is a robot with a unique style of locomotion- instead of moving over the ground, ARC suspends itself from a metal ceiling using strong electromagnets, which it launches and reels back on cables. This allows the robot to move with a swinging gait while suspended in the air.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams working on the ARC project were unable to meet in person to carry out manufacturing and assembly. The robot was designed by teams meeting virtually and was shelved after a year of development.
